Project Management and Module Development for Structural Analysis and BIM Software (BauStatik)

mbAEC 1

Project Overview

Between 2018 and 2020, mbAEC Software GmbH carried out the development and expansion of structural analysis and BIM software modules within the BauStatik product.
The goal was to develop new calculation and modeling functions for steel construction and to integrate BIM methodology into the software landscape in order to enable a seamless connection between calculation, modeling, and design.

Project Details

  • Client: mbAEC Software GmbH
  • Role: Project Manager / Product Owner
  • Project duration: 2018–2020
  • Team size: approx. 4 developers
  • Project type: Software development (structural analysis, BIM, CAD integration)
  • Construction method: Wood construction

Project Timeline

As part of an agile development project, new module series for steel construction, masonry construction, and timber construction were designed, further developed, and implemented. A wide variety of joint and connection scenarios were modeled—ranging from simple connections to complex frame and corner joints.
In parallel, BIM methodology was integrated into the software, particularly through the expansion of data structures (LOG, LOI, LOD) and the integration with the IFC format. The goal was to link structural models directly with architectural 3D models, thereby enabling end-to-end digital planning. One project in this context was structural elements.
Another part of the project involved integrating structural dynamics methods into the MicroFE product of the mbAEC product line.
Implementation took place in close collaboration with interdisciplinary teams using agile (SCRUM) and traditional project management methods (Waterfall). In addition to development, the team was also responsible for testing, releases, documentation, and user support.

Added Value / Results

The project demonstrates the ability to translate complex engineering methods into scalable software solutions while simultaneously establishing a link between structural analysis, BIM models, and design.
By integrating BIM logic into structural analysis software, a foundation has been laid for end-to-end, model-based design processes—a key building block for digitalization in the construction industry.
