As a co-initiator and spokesperson for the buildingSMART Open CDE Ecosystem Expert Group, our Managing Director Marcel Lang works alongside an interdisciplinary network of experts to advance the development of open, interoperable, and future-proof data ecosystems for the construction and real estate industries. The expert group brings together representatives from planning, construction, operations, the public sector, research, and software development with the goal of developing practical approaches for open CDE architectures, interfaces, information flows, and modern integration strategies.

Publication of the white paper “Open CDE Ecosystem”
A key milestone of this work is the publication of the white paper “Open CDE Ecosystem” by buildingSMART Verlag, to which Marcel Lang made a significant contribution as a co-author. The white paper establishes a technical foundation for a shared understanding of open CDE ecosystems, highlights the challenges and potential of interoperable system landscapes, and provides insights for open standards, multi-CDE architectures, APIs, and future use cases.
Open Innovation Platform
The expert group’s work is not merely intended as a contribution to standardization, but as an open innovation platform where theory and practice converge and new ideas for digital collaboration in the OpenBIM context are developed. The focus is on cross-domain exchange, the promotion of vendor-neutral solutions, and actively shaping the industry’s digital transformation.
