Optimizing Archicad Workflows

Optimizing Archicad Workflows

Project Overview

We were commissioned by a modular timber construction company specializing in apartment and office buildings to optimize their Archicad-based design and BIM workflows. The goal was to analyze and enhance their complete process chain—from early-stage design models to IFC data exports and high-quality visualizations for client presentations.

Scope: BIM Process Optimization, Archicad Template & Object Development, IFC Automation, Visualization Templates, Rhino & Grasshopper Integration

Our work began with an in-depth evaluation of the client’s existing workflows across design, data management, and internal-external exchanges. This included not only 2D/3D design practices but also output requirements like IFC models for collaboration and renderings for marketing and internal use.

Key Challenges Identified:

  • Overloaded and unstructured Masterlayer Templates
  • Non-parametric and redundant object libraries
  • High IFC model complexity with low process integration
  • Manual documentation linking and inefficient model annotation
  • Time-consuming rendering and inconsistent visual output
  • Lack of automation in design-to-production workflows

Template & Object Library Optimization

We restructured the existing Archicad master templates and standardized object libraries. Legacy objects were rebuilt as smart, parametric components—reducing file sizes, improving usability, and allowing scalability for different project types. This included the development of a standardized balcony system designed for modular reuse and customization.

Process-Aligned Object Metadata

To support downstream processes – like costing, production, transport logistics, and assembly – we enriched Archicad elements with custom IFC Property Sets (Psets). These were aligned with the client’s internal product keys, part numbers, and scheduling logic across the entire supply chain.

Automation via Rhino & Grasshopper

A major pain point was the manual indexing and linking of documentation to IFC model components. We developed a fully automated Rhino-Grasshopper workflow that:

  • Indexed and linked documents via unique object IDs
  • Embedded hyperlinks into the IFC model
  • Reduced manual workload and eliminated error-prone steps

Standardized Render & Animation Templates

For client-facing presentations, we implemented a high-quality rendering template using Maxon CineRender. We defined resolution, lighting, color grading, and perspective standards, as well as an instruction set for generating consistent project video walkthroughs. This ensured all future marketing materials met branding and visual standards with minimal manual effort.

Model Pre-Configuration & Draft Automation

To further streamline early-phase modeling, we built custom Rhino workflows that preconfigure base models using IFC data and Archicad plan sets. This enabled semi-automated design sketching—reducing both time and errors in the early design process.

Results Achieved:

  • Reduction in file sizes and model complexity
  • Seamless integration of object data into the IFC pipeline
  • Significantly reduced rendering and animation production time
  • Eliminated repetitive tasks via Rhino-Grasshopper automations
  • Consistent and professional client presentation materials
  • Better alignment between design and production across all teams
